I’ve banked with Barclays my entire life, but now I’m desperate to leave. Here are some highlights from the Barclays “clown/tragedy show”—the Ryanair of banking:
They hiked the monthly fees on my offshore account to an outrageous $60 per month. Unsurprisingly, I closed it. They’re notoriously hard to reach for any real assistance, but when I had six figures in my account after a property sale, they were blowing up my phone, desperate to “help” me invest it. Harder to shake off than an STD. When I sought compensation for a mis-sold packaged account, they claimed I "was not and never had been" a customer—even though I’d been with them for 15 years. Because I run foreign currency accounts, they could never decide if I was an onshore, offshore, premier, or wealth client—causing endless confusion on phone lines and internet banking. Two years ago, they randomly decided I wasn’t a UK resident and told me to close my account on very short notice. Luckily, I managed to move my accounts to HSBC (a slightly less terrible bank). Two years on, I’m still trying to close the account. I’ve been wrongly flagged in their system, and both the UK and Isle of Man branches blame each other. Nobody can actually finalize the closure. An utter shambles. They’ve wasted an enormous amount of my time and clearly couldn’t care less about the mess they’ve created
I am not happy with Barclays
I went to their branch in Small Heath to open a new business account for a new security company. They kept asking me many questions and the meeting took a while. At the end they said they couldn't help me. On the same day I went to TSB and they opened a business account straightaway. Nowadays I use Tide which was a blessing so I don't have to deal with all high street ancient and outdated banks.
