John Innes No. 3 compost is no longer worth buying since the justified exclusion of peat. I have tried batches from several suppliers and found it consistently full of contaminants like twigs, stones, and straw. The texture is problematic; despite breaking up the initial hard lumps, it quickly resets into a dense, mud-like consistency that hinders plant growth. A better solution is to create your own mix by combining a multi-purpose compost with topsoil for an ideal growing medium.
